RISO 101: Analog Techniques
Are you ready to cast your very own riso magic?! Join studioSHIFT to learn the basics of risograph printing by collaging, drawing and other analog techniques. Students will learn how to operate, troubleshoot, and register their designs through the risograph machine. This class is great for beginners looking for an accessible entry into the medium—no experience required!
Students will produce a 2-3 color print run of their design, and take home 30 copies. Collage materials, markers, crayons, pencils, washi tape, and printing paper are provided but feel free to bring any materials you’d like to use to create your design.
RISO 102: Digital Techniques
It’s time to riso-fy your life! Learn to print full color photos, illustrations and designs with the faux CMYK riso printing method. Students will learn to separate their image into 4 color layers, showcasing the color blending capabilities of layering risograph inks. Students will learn how to operate, troubleshoot, and register their designs through the risograph machine. This method is ideal for printing full-color photographs, scanned artwork (paintings, collages, etc.) and colorful digital illustrations. We'll use concepts of CMYK printing so this class is great for those interested in learning about basic digital design for riso printing!
Students should come to the workshop with a completed design file ready for printing. Finished prints will be 3 – 4 colors and students get to take home 30 copies of their work.

Patchwork Eco-Print Workshop
Join us during activity hour to help create a print run of collective relief posters honoring the artwork and legacy of Samuel Kahn and Norfolk’s ecosystem. Each attendee will be able to stamp a small carving block designed with either a local building, flora, or fauna creating a patchwork ecological map of Norfolk with other attendees. We will be using plant-based ink pigments, recycled paper, and tools. All tools and supplies provided and no prior printmaking experience required.
Cyanotypes 101
Come join us for a day of Cyanotype magic. This is intended for artists of all skill levels. You will learn rudimentary theory of photographic contact-prints while partaking in paper-coating, negative preparation, exposure, “development”, and post-processing techniques. Students will walk away with 3 prints of their work.

The Make a Zine workshop is a great experience for newbies and experienced zine makers alike. Join us for a hands-on workshop where you will create your own zine using analog techniques and walk away with 50 copies of your work that you can sell or trade!
You’ll learn about the history and purpose of zines, as well as how a risograph machine works and why it’s a great option for printing zines.
This workshop consists of an intro to zines and risograph technology, followed by time for collaging and drawing to create the master page for your zine. The final step is scanning your work and working with the riso machine to print your copies.

Self-Love Print Day
Join us for Self-Love Print Day with the Norfolk Community Services Board’s Peer Recovery Services on Friday, February 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. Guests will be able to screen print their own t-shirt with a design that promotes self-love in preparation for Valentine’s Day.
All materials provided and no prior printmaking experience required. It is also free and open to the public!

Intro to Intaglio
The intro to intaglio class will teach participants how to prepare copper plates for drypoint and printing it on special printmaking paper off of a tabletop press. Drypoint is engraving using a twisted steel needle point called a scribe. Participants will have enough time to pull about 3-5 prints off the printing press. Materials will be provided to make a 4”x6” drawing. Please bring a sketch or idea of a line drawing for single color prints.
