Intro to Intaglio

Intro to Intaglio

The intro to intaglio class will teach participants how to prepare copper plates for drypoint and printing it on special printmaking paper off of a tabletop press. Drypoint is engraving using a twisted steel needle point called a scribe. Participants will have enough time to pull about 3-5 prints off the printing press. Materials will be provided to make a 4”x6” drawing. Please bring a sketch or idea of a line drawing for single color prints.

Drawn to be wild, this IgNITE pairs the region’s best tattoo artists with exciting and diverse printmaking and features the 2025 Coastal Virginia Print Fair presented by Studio Shift and Norfolk Zinefest. Yes, it’s an ink fiesta! The Chrysler’s Oaxaca Central print exhibition has inspired a party full of possibilities. Flash your tattoos while getting busy on the dance floor, experiment with printmaking techniques, enjoy mad music mixes, check out go big or go home art demos, and delight in Mezcal and Mexican street food.

Cosponsored by WHS and Gay Cultural Studies, this event begins at 6 PM with hands-on workshops in embroidery, block printing, and book binding led by local artists Katherine Kaywinnet, Sarah of Studio Shift, and Tuff from the 757 Creative ReUse Center. Materials are provided—just bring your enthusiasm!

At 7 PM, we’ll hear from Shannon Downey (aka Badass Cross Stitch) about the powerful role women and queer activists have played in using craftivism to create change.

Participants can use digital or hand drawn elements or a combination of both, to create a large edition one-page artist zine, where personal content will be explored. This workshop is open to both beginner and advanced artists.

Students will learn how to layout their publication as well as operate, troubleshoot, and register each page through the risograph machine. The workshop will end with a fresh zine swap! Finished prints will be 1 color and students get to take home 50 copies of their zine.

Relief Printmaking 101

In this workshop, students will learn the basics of relief carving and printing using Speedy-Carve™ blocks and traditional relief gouging tools. Students will see examples of various techniques from contemporary artists, experiment with image transfer, carving and inking a block, and create a limited edition of prints on a Woodzilla relief press.

All materials will be provided, but we suggest bringing a notebook, pencil, and any source images you would like to use.
